My Personal Review: Washoe Park Disc Golf Course (Reno, NV)

Standing at 9,840 feet, with an 18-hole and Par 67 configuration, the Washoe Park Disc Golf Course captures the union of traditional ball golf and disc golf. As a disc golf enthusiast, I ventured into the heart of Reno, ready to explore everything this newly established course (2020) had to offer. And I was not disappointed.

Costs and Amenities

The course operates during winter hours, from 10am until closing, every day of the week, and it’s Pay-to-Play with the cost being $10/round. Here are some important aspects to note:

  • There are other fees, such as $15 for a cart (when available). Considering the length of the course, I recommend getting a cart if possible.
  • You’ll need to check in at the Pro Shop before setting out.
  • The course is cart-friendly, and drinking water is available.
  • There are also restrooms available throughout the course, which is a nice convenience.
  • Please note that this course is a mixed-use golf course, so you’ll be sharing the grounds with traditional golfers.

Course Description

Washoe Park Disc Golf Course is a long course with rubber tees and DISCatcher Pro (28 chains) targets. It’s designed to play along and between existing golf holes. Even though it’s a long journey, the course is not overly technical. The Par 4s were easier, whilst the Par 3s provided a challenging twist. Here are some aspects you should be aware of:

  • Navigational Challenges: You must have the UDisc app to navigate this course, as the layout can be confusing, and there’s minimal signage to help guide you to the next holes.
  • Playing with Ball Golfers: The course often sees a lot of golfing activity, which sometimes influences the pace of the disc golf game. Just remember to be alert, as golf balls have a tendency to land near the disc golf areas.
  • Safety: Always be aware of your surroundings. I almost got hit by golf balls a couple of times, even when I made sure to stay alert. In this regard, the civil nature of play extended by the ball golfers could be improved.

Playing Experience

Playing at Washoe Park was an interesting and challenging experience. As a disc golfer, you get to enjoy the well-maintained, long courses that offer a good mix of open tee shots and some set in the trees. Even though my arm and legs were giving up, I appreciated the experience and lessons learned.

The sense of joy from taking on the Washoe Park Disc Golf Course is framed by the length of the course, a good deal of walking, and dodging the occasional wayward golf ball. Overall, I would recommend this course to anyone in the Reno area. It certainly provides a challenging adventure for the avid disc golfer.
