Mayor’s Park Disc Golf Course (McAlinden Park) Review – Reno, NV

As a seasoned disc golfer, I’ve had the pleasure (and strain!) of testing my skills at many courses across the country.

My experiences fluctuate from nearly professional manicured landscapes to rugged, grassroots-style courses laid out in the heart of nature. What brought me to pen down this piece today is my recent visit to the Mayor’s Park Disc Golf Course located in McAlinden Park.

About the Course:

  • Established in 2020
  • Consists of 23 Holes with rubber mat and concrete tees mapped across the course.
  • This course employs DISCatcher Pro (28 chains) and DISCatcher Pro (original) targets.
  • It exists within the bounds of a mixed-use, public park.
  • Other amenities include access to drinking water, restrooms, and allowance for dogs (see below).

Location:

The starting point of the course, amusingly, is right next to a children’s playground, on the other edge of the trees, just beyond the practice basket. A friendly start if you ask me!

Course Layout and Difficulty:

This course is set in a lovely high desert terrain punctuated with vistas of the great mountains ahead – a sight to behold indeed. The layout of the course makes it a challenging yet enjoyable ride.

There’s a distinct divide in difficulty levels between the front nine and the back nine. While the front nine is relatively beginner-friendly, the back nine doles out a more stern challenge.

Signature Hole:

Hole 15, I must say, caught my eye in special ways with its unique layout. It has a mandatory “gate”, forcing disc golfers to direct their throws through a specific area. Miss, and you’re out of bounds. It’s this polemic setting which makes Hole 15 stand out—undoubtedly, a signature hole.

Pro-tip:

The course commendably utilizes the minimal terrain available. However, first-timers might get a little confused navigating from hole to hole. Here’s a golden tip— keep a keen eye on the instructive signs on the tee pads; they guide you to the next tee.

The course, though bristling with desert charm, can be marred by its broken glass littering in certain sections. To the dog owners and disc golf enthusiasts venturing here, I advise both caution and bright, easily-located discs for a safer and more enjoyable experience.

My Thoughts

My final verdict on the Mayor’s Park Disc Golf Course is a thumbs up. Despite the broken glass issue, I found it to be an efficient, fun, and challenging course. From out-of-bound lines to mandatories, this course keeps you on your toes while ensuring that a misaimed disc won’t disappear into a black hole.

Undoubtedly, the Mayor’s Park Disc Golf Course warrants a visit from any disc golf lover. And I, for one, am already looking forward to my next throw among its unique desert charm and welcome challenges.
